Chitwan National Park - Nepal's Wildlife Paradise

Experience incredible wildlife, jungle safaris, and the Tharu culture in Nepal's first national park.

About Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is Nepal's first national park, established in 1973 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the subtropical inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal, it covers an area of 952.63 km² and is home to one of the last populations of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros and the Bengal tiger.

Wildlife & Conservation

Chitwan is famous for its rich ecosystem. The park is home to 68 species of mammals including Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceros, leopards, sloth bears, wild elephants, and the endangered Gharial crocodile. Over 544 species of birds have been recorded, making it a birdwatcher's paradise.

Jungle Safari Experiences

Visitors can explore the park through various safari options: jeep safaris, elephant-back safaris, canoe rides on the Rapti River, jungle walks with experienced naturalists, and bird watching tours. Each offers unique opportunities to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.

Tharu Culture

The indigenous Tharu people have lived in the region for centuries. Visitors can experience their unique culture through village tours, traditional dance performances, and tasting authentic Tharu cuisine. The Tharu Cultural Museum provides insights into their history and lifestyle.

Elephant Breeding Center

The Khorsor Elephant Breeding Center is the first of its kind in Nepal, established to increase the population of domesticated elephants. Visitors can observe baby elephants and learn about elephant conservation efforts.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Chitwan is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and dry. April to June is hot but offers good wildlife viewing as animals gather near water sources. The monsoon season (July to September) sees heavy rainfall but lush green vegetation.

Getting There

Chitwan is accessible by a 5-6 hour drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara, or by a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Bharatpur Airport followed by a 30-minute drive to the park entrance. Regular tourist buses and private vehicles are available.
